Travel guide: Manama
Easier than you thinkA compact capital just 15–25 minutes by car from the airport. English is widely spoken and ride-hailing apps work, so getting around is easy. December–January is the comfortable season for sightseeing.
Getting there
Bahrain International Airport (BAH) on Muharraq Island is about 8–10 km from central Manama. The airport's published taxi rate to Manama is about BD 6, and Uber/Careem pick up from a signposted area. Bus A1 runs to Manama Bus Terminal for BD 0.3 (exact cash to the driver).
Things to see nearby
- Bab Al Bahrain & Manama SouqThe 1949 gateway and old market in the city centre; gold, pearls, fabrics and sweets, busy until late.
- Bahrain National MuseumDilmun and pearl-diving galleries, about 10 min by taxi from the centre; admission about BD 1.
- Al Fateh Grand MosqueOne of the largest mosques in the region, in Juffair, about 10 min by car. Free guided visits Sat–Thu 9am–4pm; abayas lent to women.
- Bahrain Fort (Qal'at al-Bahrain)UNESCO-listed site with 4,000 years of history and a museum, about 10–15 min by car; best late afternoon.
Food
Start with machboos, Bahrain's spiced rice with meat or fish. Also try muhammar (sweet rice with dates) with fried fish, and Bahraini halwa, often offered as a taste at souq sweet shops. Karak tea is everywhere. Alcohol is served only in licensed venues.

Paying & staying connected
Cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and malls. Many taxi drivers prefer cash, so carry some BD (airport ATMs dispense it). Ride-hailing apps are cashless. On buses a GO Card (BD 1) cuts fares to BD 0.275 with a BD 0.7 daily cap. Set up an eSIM before you fly.
Staying safe
Generally safe, but robberies of foreigners and phone/online scams are reported. Demonstrations sometimes occur in Shia residential areas, mainly at weekends; stay away. Photographing airports, military or government sites is banned, as is drinking in public. Always carry your passport. Emergency: 999.
With family & friends
Walk from Bab Al Bahrain through the souq, then see the pearl-diving story at the National Museum. In the evening, catch the sunset over the sea at Bahrain Fort, a UNESCO site.

Booking tips
- Book one night at a time, so you can cancel just the nights after you lose.
- Some hotels (e.g. Toyoko Inn in Japan) offer rates you can cancel free until shortly before arrival when booked on their own site. Deadlines differ by hotel and rate — always check before booking.
- The cancellation deadline can differ between a booking site and the hotel's own site.
- On Airbnb, a home with a "Flexible" cancellation policy usually gives a full refund up to a day before.
