Travel guide: Ajmer
Easier than you thinkAjmer is a pilgrimage city built around the Sufi shrine of Ajmer Sharif Dargah, so it is used to visitors. The Vande Bharat express from Delhi takes about 5 h 15 min via Jaipur.
Getting there
The nearest airport is Kishangarh (KQH), about 27 km north-east of Ajmer, with IndiGo flights from Delhi, Ahmedabad and others and Star Air from Pune, Nagpur, Lucknow and others. Jaipur International, with far more flights, is about 130–140 km away (2–3 h by car). By rail, the Vande Bharat from Delhi Cantt reaches Ajmer in about 5 h 15 min; the Shatabdi takes about 6 h 15 min.
Things to see nearby
- Ajmer Sharif DargahShrine of the Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti in the old city, about 10 min by auto from the station. Open 5am–9pm in winter; famous evening qawwali. Cover your head.
- Ana Sagar Lake12th-century lake with marble pavilions and gardens, about 10 min by car from the centre. Boating 8am–8pm; lovely at sunset.
- Adhai Din Ka JhonpraEarly Indo-Islamic mosque ruins, walkable from the Dargah. Open 6am–7pm.
- PushkarHoly town with the Brahma Temple and a lake ringed by 52 ghats, about 10–15 km north-west; about 30 min by car.
Food
The lanes around the Dargah are lined with big pots of biryani. Try the local sohan halwa, kachori kadhi and doodh jalebi (jalebi in hot milk). Many places are vegetarian, and hotel restaurants are a safe fallback.

Paying & staying connected
Bazaars and auto-rickshaws are mostly cash (rupees); hotels and larger shops take cards. Ride-hailing cars can be scarce, so ask your hotel to arrange a car. Get India's e-Visa at indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa at least 4 days ahead. Set up an eSIM before you fly.
Staying safe
The crowded lanes around the Dargah call for care with pickpockets and bags. Cover your head with a scarf or handkerchief and dress modestly to enter the shrine. Stick to bottled water and freshly cooked food, and use hotel-arranged cars at night.
With family & friends
The lakeside gardens of Ana Sagar are lovely for an evening stroll or a boat ride. Pushkar, about 30 min by car, is a small holy town with a sacred lake and the Brahma Temple, ideal for a half-day trip.

Booking tips
- Book one night at a time, so you can cancel just the nights after you lose.
- Some hotels (e.g. Toyoko Inn in Japan) offer rates you can cancel free until shortly before arrival when booked on their own site. Deadlines differ by hotel and rate — always check before booking.
- The cancellation deadline can differ between a booking site and the hotel's own site.
- On Airbnb, a home with a "Flexible" cancellation policy usually gives a full refund up to a day before.
