      Travel guide: Hong Kong

Easier than you thinkHong Kong has direct flights from across Asia, and the Airport Express reaches Central in about 24 minutes. English is widely spoken and the city is compact.

      Getting there

From Hong Kong International Airport, the Airport Express runs to Hong Kong Station (Central) in about 24 min for HK$130 (~$17). For The American Club in Tai Tam, take a taxi from Central (about 25–30 min) or Citybus 14 from near MTR Sai Wan Ho to the 'The American Club' stop. For The Hong Kong Country Club in Deep Water Bay, buses 6A, 6X or 260 from Central take about 20 min; from MTR Ocean Park Station a short taxi is easiest.

      Staying somewhere else

      Taikoo / Quarry Bay
MTR 1–2 stops to Sai Wan Ho, then Citybus 14 to the American Club stop (about 15–20 min, about HK$8). Taxi about 15 min, about HK$80.
      Causeway Bay
MTR Island Line to Sai Wan Ho (about 10 min) plus bus 14; about 35–40 min door to door. Taxi about 25 min, about HK$100–130.
      Central / Admiralty
Taxi about 25–30 min, about HK$130–160; or MTR to Sai Wan Ho and bus 14, about 45 min.

Tip: Bus 14 serves the American Club stop only in the Stanley-bound direction, so a taxi is easiest for the return; Uber also works in Hong Kong.

      Things to see nearby

      • Stanley MarketSeaside market for souvenirs and casual shopping, with waterfront restaurants nearby. About 10 min by taxi.

      • Victoria PeakClassic skyline view over the harbour, about 25 min by taxi, or ride the Peak Tram. Go just before sunset for day and night views.

      Food

Don't miss dim sum, wonton noodles, and milk tea with egg tarts at a cha chaan teng (local café). Stanley and Repulse Bay near the venues have many restaurants, and malls have food courts and convenience stores.

      Paying & staying connected

Get an Octopus card for buses, the MTR and convenience stores. Cards are widely accepted, and since April 2026 taxis must take electronic payment, but carry some cash as a backup. Uber and the HKTaxi app work for ride-hailing. An eSIM is the easiest way to stay connected.

      Staying safe

Hong Kong is generally safe; watch for pickpockets in crowds. May to November is hot and humid, and typhoon signals can disrupt transport and match schedules. Tai Tam and Deep Water Bay are hilly, so take a taxi rather than walking far.

      With family & friends

Ocean Park is right next to The Hong Kong Country Club. Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay beaches and Stanley Market are 10–20 minutes by car. Victoria Peak and shopping in Central are also easy to reach.

Prices and details are rough guides (researched in 2026). Please check the latest before you travel.

      Booking tips

      • Book one night at a time, so you can cancel just the nights after you lose.
      • Some hotels (e.g. Toyoko Inn in Japan) offer rates you can cancel free until shortly before arrival when booked on their own site. Deadlines differ by hotel and rate — always check before booking.
      • The cancellation deadline can differ between a booking site and the hotel's own site.
      • On Airbnb, a home with a "Flexible" cancellation policy usually gives a full refund up to a day before.
