      Travel guide: Khao Lak

Easier than you thinkPhuket airport is about 90 minutes away by car, and the airport taxi counter sells fixed-price rides. Robinson Khao Lak is a five-minute walk from Bang Niang Beach, so once you arrive you can simply relax at the resort.

      Getting there

Phuket International Airport (HKT) is 75–80 km away, 80–100 minutes by car. The airport taxi counter charges about THB 2,000 (≈USD 60) per car (up to 3 people) to the Khuk Khak area. Pre-booked transfers run THB 1,500–2,500, and the resort offers a paid shuttle. Public buses don't leave from the airport itself.

      Paying & staying connected

Visa and Mastercard work at hotels and restaurants. Bring cash for stalls, markets and national park fees. ATMs charge about THB 250–350 per foreign-card withdrawal; if offered your home currency, choose baht instead. An eSIM is the easiest way to get data. Book cars and boat tours through your hotel.

      Staying safe

Thailand is one of the easier countries in Southeast Asia for visitors, but normal care applies. Swim only at beaches with lifeguards and red-and-yellow flags; Andaman Sea surf gets rough in the rainy season (roughly June–October). Drink bottled, not tap, water. Use sunscreen and stay hydrated. Tourist Police: 1155 (English).

      With family & friends

Walk or swim at the beach in front of the resort, or visit Sai Rung Waterfall, about 15 minutes by car. Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park has easy hikes (THB 100 for foreign adults). Takua Pa Old Town, mangrove kayaking, and boat trips to the Similan Islands or Phang Nga Bay are popular too (check tour seasons).

      Entry rules

Since 15 September 2026, visa-free stays for Japanese, US, UK and Australian passport holders (among 60 countries) are 30 days, down from 60. All foreign visitors must complete the free TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card) at tdac.immigration.go.th, up to 3 days before arrival. Check your own nationality's rules.

Prices and details are rough guides (researched in 2026). Please check the latest before you travel.

      Booking tips

      • Book one night at a time, so you can cancel just the nights after you lose.
      • Some hotels (e.g. Toyoko Inn in Japan) offer rates you can cancel free until shortly before arrival when booked on their own site. Deadlines differ by hotel and rate — always check before booking.
      • The cancellation deadline can differ between a booking site and the hotel's own site.
      • On Airbnb, a home with a "Flexible" cancellation policy usually gives a full refund up to a day before.
