Travel guide: Vadodara
Easier than you thinkThe former capital of the princely state of Baroda, Vadodara is a relaxed cultural city with palaces and museums. It sits on the Mumbai–Delhi main line, about 4.5 hours from Mumbai by Vande Bharat. Late December is dry and sunny, with highs around 30°C and lows around 15°C.
Getting there
Vadodara Airport (BDQ) in Harni is about 8 km from the city centre. IndiGo and Air India fly from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Goa and more. By rail, the Vande Bharat from Mumbai Central reaches Vadodara in about 4 hours 20 minutes (no service on Wednesdays). Ahmedabad, with more international flights, is about 112 km away by road or rail.
Things to see nearby
- Laxmi Vilas PalaceGrand palace of the Gaekwad family, about 10 min by car from the centre. Entry ₹150, closed Mondays, audio guide available.
- Sayaji Baug & Baroda MuseumLarge central park with a museum and picture gallery, about 10 min by car. Nice for an evening walk.
- Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological ParkUNESCO World Heritage mosques and fortifications, about 50 km away (about 1 hour by car).
- Statue of UnityThe world's tallest statue at 182 m, about 90 km away (about 1.5 hours by car). A full-day trip.
Food
This is Gujarati food country: don't miss a multi-dish Gujarati thali. Breakfast is fafda with jalebi; snack on sev usal (spicy pea curry topped with crunchy sev) and khandvi. Street food clusters around Mandvi and Raopura, and most food is vegetarian.

Paying & staying connected
Hotels and larger shops take cards; stalls and small shops are cash (rupees) or UPI. Uber, Ola and Rapido work here. Gujarat is a dry state: foreign visitors can get a free tourist liquor permit (up to one month) on the state's e-Permit portal and buy from licensed shops for private drinking, but not in restaurants or bars. Get India's e-Visa at indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa at least 4 days ahead. Set up an eSIM before you fly.
Staying safe
A fairly safe city, but take normal care. Stick to bottled water and freshly cooked food. The sun is strong, so hydrate and use sunscreen for day matches. Use ride-hailing or hotel cars at night.
With family & friends
Laxmi Vilas Palace and Sayaji Baug with the Baroda Museum are close to the centre and easy between matches. With a free day, visit the UNESCO site of Champaner-Pavagadh.
Prices and details are rough guides (researched in 2026). Please check the latest before you travel.

Booking tips
- Book one night at a time, so you can cancel just the nights after you lose.
- Some hotels (e.g. Toyoko Inn in Japan) offer rates you can cancel free until shortly before arrival when booked on their own site. Deadlines differ by hotel and rate — always check before booking.
- The cancellation deadline can differ between a booking site and the hotel's own site.
- On Airbnb, a home with a "Flexible" cancellation policy usually gives a full refund up to a day before.
