Travel guide: Guangzhou
Easier than you thinkGuangzhou has many direct flights, and the venue hosted tennis at the 2010 Asian Games. One metro line takes you from the airport into Tianhe.
Getting there
From Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport T2, Metro Line 3 reaches central Tianhe (Tiyu Xilu) in 45–60 min for ¥7–12. The venue is in east Tianhe by the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center, near Huangcun station (Lines 4 and 21). A taxi from the airport takes 45–70 min, ¥120–200 plus tolls.

Paying & staying connected
Pay mostly by Alipay or WeChat Pay; both accept foreign Visa/Mastercard after ID verification (3% fee over ¥200). Few shops take foreign cards, so carry some cash. Google, WhatsApp and most Western apps need roaming or a travel eSIM. DiDi works in English. Japan, Korea, Australia, NZ and much of Europe get 30-day visa-free entry until 31 Dec 2026.
Staying safe
Guangzhou generally feels calm, but mind pickpockets in crowds. Avoid drivers who approach you at arrivals; use the taxi queue or DiDi. Drink bottled water. Summers are hot and humid with possible typhoons, so plan for heat and check the forecast.
With family & friends
By metro, Zhujiang New Town offers Canton Tower, Pearl River night cruises and Huacheng Square. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall suits history fans, and Tianhe has large shopping malls.
