      Travel guide: Qiandaohu

Easier than you thinkQiandao Lake is about 50 minutes from Hangzhou by high-speed train, with 45+ trains a day, so you can arrive in Shanghai or Hangzhou and be at the lake the same day.

      Getting there

High-speed trains run from Hangzhou East to Qiandaohu station in about 45 min–1.5 hours (45+ a day). The station is some way from the lakeside town: allow 30–40 min by taxi, or over an hour by bus. Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport is about 2 hours by car.

From your hotel to the venue

      From the official hotel

      Staying somewhere else

      Qiandaohu town centre
About 2 km from the venue; taxi about 5-10 min, about CNY 12-15. Plenty of hotels and restaurants around Xiushui Square.
      Qiandaohu bus terminal
About 2 km from the venue; taxi about 5-10 min. Long-distance buses from Hangzhou arrive here.
      Qiandaohu HSR station

      Things to see nearby

      • Central Lake CruiseThe classic boat loop among the lake's 1,000+ islands, landing on Moonlight Island etc.; 4-5 hrs. Pier ~10-15 min by car.
      • Lakeside Greenway CyclingBike path along the shore; rentals near the central pier. Best in the late afternoon light.
      • Qiandao Lake Fish-Head SoupThe lake's signature dish - a big fish head stewed into a rich soup. Easy to find in restaurants around town.
      • Wenyuan Lion CityMing/Qing-style streets inspired by the ancient city submerged under the lake; nice for an evening stroll. ~15 min by car.

      Food

The local speciality is lake fish, especially braised fish head, plus Chun'an tofu dishes and seasonal fruit such as peaches. The town has simple restaurants, chains and convenience stores.

      Local meal
      ¥20–60 (~$3–8)

      Paying & staying connected

Pay mostly by Alipay or WeChat Pay; both accept foreign Visa/Mastercard after ID verification (3% fee over ¥200). Foreign cards rarely work in smaller towns, so carry some cash. Google, WhatsApp and most Western apps need roaming or a travel eSIM. Ride-hailing: DiDi. Japan, Korea, Australia, NZ and much of Europe get 30-day visa-free entry until 31 Dec 2026.

      Staying safe

A quiet resort town, but stay sensible. Use the taxi queue or DiDi rather than drivers who approach you at the station. Drink bottled water. Summers are hot, so bring sun protection and water for cycling or boat trips.

      With family & friends

Lake cruises to islands such as Meifeng (viewpoint) are the classic outing (08:00–17:00). Lakeside cycling paths are scenic, and Guihua Island has osmanthus blossom in autumn. Hangzhou's West Lake is about an hour away by train.

Prices and details are rough guides (researched in 2026). Please check the latest before you travel.

      • Book one night at a time, so you can cancel just the nights after you lose.
      • Some hotels (e.g. Toyoko Inn in Japan) offer rates you can cancel free until shortly before arrival when booked on their own site. Deadlines differ by hotel and rate — always check before booking.
      • The cancellation deadline can differ between a booking site and the hotel's own site.
      • On Airbnb, a home with a "Flexible" cancellation policy usually gives a full refund up to a day before.
