Men's 30ONE DROP

Stepping in and attacking
off both wings.

Inspired by his father, a sports photographer who covered the Grand Slams for many years, Ryota Tanuma has twice reached the All Japan quarter-finals and still competes on the ITF circuit at home and abroad. We asked about his goals for the World Championships.

Q1

Please introduce yourself

My father photographs the Grand Slams — that's how I got into tennis.

Hello everyone, I'm Ryota Tanuma. I got into tennis because of my father. He's a professional sports photographer who has shot the Grand Slams for many years, and that's what led me to start playing.

My main results are two All Japan Championships quarter-finals, and several ITF titles in both singles and doubles.

I play for ONE DROP and compete mainly in ITF events in Japan and abroad.

Q2

What should people watch for at the World Championships?

Watch for my attacking game.

I want to bring what I've been working on in practice into my matches. My game is very aggressive — I step in and attack off both the forehand and backhand — so I'd love for you to watch for that.

I play the corporate Japan League, so I play a team event once a year. Still, team matches are always nerve-racking, because my result can decide the team's result. I'll stay focused and give it everything.

Q3

What do you want to take on next?

Win on my own terms — and earn from it.

As a pro, I want to get results and win matches on the way to my goals. Ranking points matter, of course, but I want to win with my own strength and earn proper prize money.

I also want to work on social media — to put myself out there while I'm still playing and let more people know who I am.

Q4

Finally, a word for tennis fans

Come to the venue and cheer them on!

As you all know, Kei Nishikori has retired, and I'm sure many people feel sad about that.

But Japan has many other great players. Please come to the venue and cheer them on.
